I've finally completed watching Mad Men. Mad Men was about the advertising world, where they pitched and sold ideas to their clients. A bit similar to the architecture world.
Mad Men was basically revolved around a man, who saw an opportunity for a second chance of life, and snatched it without much thinking. He fled from his past, burned the bridges behind him rather than trying to mend them, reinvented himself and made a label of his name. Don Draper.
The second life provided him a name, a high-paid career, a long list of accomplishment, he became a major asset to his company, acquired a talent in selling ideas and happiness, and two marriages to beautiful women and had 3 children. He was living a dream life that was coveted by other men. He was the man.
However, underneath his suave look and an impeccable sense of fashion, he was a complicated character. He was loyal to his friends, generous, kind and gentle at some point, but he was conflicted, because he was haunted by his hidden history. He was divisive, honest and selfish, a common set of traits of a businessman and a man with control issues. He threw himself into a vicious cycle of self-destructive behavior, he sought various ways to lead himself into destruction because he believed he did not deserve his second life. Somehow, he’s a man in a suit driven by self-loathing, who let his regret to wound his soul and festered in his soul.
I spent the whole time watching the series trying to figure out who Don Draper was, and I thought he was a living manifestation of insecurity. Don Draper was a complicated and mysterious character, yet intriguing. He was a sad character. He's the man you hate to love.
All in all, this was a really great series.
